On the Sixth Day of Christmas…

My true love gave to me….6 geese a laying…
I love to relax – I don’t do it much but I think it’s very important to put work away and walk away from chores and just bask in the beauty of R&R. “Geese a laying” reminds me that I have to make time to rest. Going, going, going is not healthy without downtime. So what do I like to do?
I LOVE TO READ! I read everything – labels, forms, bottles, boxes, magazines, papers, brochures, menus (especially menus), books – lots and lots of books. I am always reading about 5 books at a time not including web sites and magazines. I can’t get enough – it’s a like an obsession. I can honestly say I like to read more than I like to eat and that’s a big step for a former eat-a-holic.
Right now I’m reading:
The Complete works of Sherlock HOlmes – this book is as big as a bible!
The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands
Time out for Leadership
100 Simple Secrets of Happy People
From Frumpy to Foxy in 15 Minutes
Smart Women by Judy Blume
And anything else I can get my hands on
I always read:
Real Simple
Fast Company
Highlights – this is the best magazine – I’ve learned so much and I love the puzzles.
Country Home
eWeek.com (of course I work there)
Golf for Women
Thrasher (it’s my hubba hubbie’s)
Any random catalog
I think reading is my number one way to relax. I also do my crafts (I make jewelry, embroider, sew, make puppets, make cards, and make random cool things I see in magazines).
I love to walk on the beach and work out, too. Like I mentioned on the First Day, I love my videos. I also like to cook and hang out with my lovie.
As a former work-a-holic who never took time to relax, I enjoy myself so much more now that I take the time. I haven’t traveled much yet, but I think books open my mind to other places, times, people and ways of life. I had a colleague once who told me I needed to be more strategic when I was working at an agency. I asked him how to do that – he said to read strategic books. I thought he was a dink, but I do read Nelson DeMille, John Grisham and random business books (my favorite being “Marketing Warfare” and it has definitely helped me to look at the big picture AND tactical stuff, too.
It’s because of my reading that I feel I’ve become an asset to every organization I’m associated with, but I also think, because I’m not a work-a-holic anymore and I like to relax and enjoy time out of work, it’s made me a more pleasant person, too.
Not that anyone listens to me or my advice – but if I could say one thing – READ! Turn off the tele! Think for yourself and come to your own conclusions instead of being force fed lame stories and false news. READ – and stretch your imagination and your ideals and your beliefs – you don’t have to change them, just challenge them.
And BREATHE – everything works out but no one will tell you to take more time to relax – except me – and my mom – and my husband.
Anyone still listening?
Heehee…
